Abstract
This paper offers a brief glimpse into the American comic book industry during the Cold War. It uses the debut and early appearances of Iron Man in the Tales of Suspense series as a central point of focus. Beneath the colorful pages and often low-brow dialogue within the examined issues, there lies telling glimpses into popular American sentiments towards the Soviet Union and communism. As depicted by Marvel Comics, Cold War Americans are trapped between contradicting emotions of confident arrogance and extreme suspicion. Parallels may also be drawn between true historical events and their counterparts which become issues for Iron Man to tackle in his series.
