Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) applications are increasingly used for spatial design tasks, yet engaging such systems remains challenging when user input is continuous, imprecise, and constrained by domain-specific design rules. This paper presents the Context-Aware Spatial Layout (CASL) framework for gesture-driven, constraint-aware layout design in VR. CASL combines global layout initialization with localized semantic snapping, interpreting hand gestures as coarse spatial intent and resolving them into nearby, design-compliant configurations. We demonstrate CASL in an interior layout design testbed and evaluate its computational performance across global organization and local gesture-guided refinement scenarios. Results show consistent reductions in layout energy cost and improved refinement performance compared with standard grid-based snapping. CASL offers a practical architecture for balancing embodied user control with domain-aware computational assistance in human-interactive VR applications.
