Abstract

This paper presents a physicochemical study that merges science and art in the context of exploring the refractive index of water under nanoconfinement. Using a simple and economical experimental approach, it is shown that confinement within the micropores of a zeolitic structure, characterized using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, paradoxically reduces the refractive index of water, bringing confined water droplets closer to a shadowless state. Counterintuitively, water under confinement, as indicated by vibrational spectroscopic analyses performed in the transmittance mode in the IR range and reflectance mode in the near-IR range, exhibits greater structural freedom than in its bulk or surface states. An inverse relationship was found between the micropore size and the refractive index of confined water, as well as the structural resemblance of confined water molecules to those in an ideal gas state. This finding inspired the elaboration of the idea that restrictive conditions are commensurate with liberation – a stance serving as a symbol of hope for those who find themselves oppressed. The narrative framing this research, built around the author’s metaphorical journey through hell, purgatory and heaven, mirrors the scientific process: from the struggle to formulate an original research question, through diligent experimentation, to the ultimate reflection on the moral and aesthetic implications of the findings. Drawing parallels between Dante’s pilgrimage as documented in the Commedia and the author’s quest, the paper serves as a critique of the cultural and epistemic aridity prevalent in contemporary science, which the author likens to a desert, calling for its renaissance through an infusion of poetry and lyricism. Despite the anguish and despair proliferating across the pages of the paper, stemming from witnessing the idea of merging science and art vanish like droplets on dry ground, the study ends on a high note with the realization of unexpected beauty and freedom in confined water – a single luminous droplet, pressed between the narrowest of walls, that refused to disappear into the dust and instead chose to shine.
