Abstract
Caveolin-2 may act as a scaffolding protein within caveolar/lipid raft membranes. Caveolin-2 forms stable hetero-oligomeric complexes with caveolin-1 in many cell types, including fibroblastic cells. Caveolin-2 can also interact with caveolin-3, the striated muscle-specific isoform, when co-expressed in muscle cells. Caveolin-2/caveolin-3 interaction does not occur in non-muscle cells. Caveolin-2 appears to act in conjunction with other caveolin isoforms to form the caveolar coat. The exact function of caveolin-2 in such hetero-oligomers in unknown.
