    Helen G. Staebler Martin

This letter was written on May 7, 1945, one day before the end of World War II in Europe (V-E Day, Victory in Europe Day). Lt. Helen Gertrude Staebler Martin, a nurse with the 36th General Hospital in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, describes to her parents how everyone in the hospital eagerly waits for the official ceasefire announcement. She further elaborates on the celebratory atmosphere in France and amongst the French people, knowing the war in Europe is nearing its end.
