City of Orange (California); Chapman University--Thurmond Clarke Memorial Library
February 17, 1967 was designated as “Haul-it-Day” by then Head Librarian Alice Flint. Classes were dismissed to allow faculty and students to move some 55,000 volumes from Memorial Hall to the new College Library. The undertaking was engineered by Flint’s husband, Dr. Arthur Flint, then Chairman of the Natural Sciences Department, who supervised the transfer of books, on a conveyor belt, through a second floor window to the new building. Boxes, pallets, and jacks were donated by Golden West Citrus Association, Alpha Beta Markets, And Thomas Electric Company to move the books. At left, Melvin Watson, Chemical Engineering Department, and on the right, William D. Hall, Chairman of the Music Department.
