Israeli Fortress 'X' on the Suez Canal: As Israel prepares to celebrate 25 years of nationhood, the struggle to survive still continues. Here, an Israeli soldier cleans his Uzzi submachine gun in an underground bunker on the Suez Canal. This is the end of the road for Israelis, 210 miles from Tel Aviv. Just across the canal the Army of Egypt is similarly dug in. It is a battlefield in recess.
