Description

Forest products companies have their own version of the backyard pool. Log ponds, some of them steam-heated to facilitate the handling of logs in sub-freezing temperatures, are an essential part of sawmill operations. The logs are stored in the man-made and natural pools until they are needed for processing. Most of the logs are brought in by train and by truck. Here, mill pond water churns and boils as huge pine logs roll off a truck into the water at a Western Pine Region Sawmill.
