Description

Bar Elias, Lebanon: Lebanese civilians view smoldering wreckage of a Syrian warplane shot down 10/6 during air battle between Syrian and Israeli jets. The plane slammed into the earth just outside Bar Elias, a town 25 miles from Beirut in central Lebanon. As Israeli forces engaged Syrian planes, tanks and troops in the north, Egyptian troops swarmed across the Suez Canal and established beachheads in the occupied Sinai Peninsula. The resumption of war in the Mideast came on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, when most Jews were fasting and worshipping.
