Oxford, Miss.: Negro James Meredith, 29, is escorted to his first class at the University of Mississippi here early Oct. 1st by U.S. Marshal James McShane (right) and another unidentified Marshal. Meredith went to his first class, Colonial American History, with his hands to his eyes, trying to protect them from the lingering fumes of tear gas used to break up the previous night's riot.
